Now, I heard that the best way to start one of these talks is to tell a joke. So, um, here we go. What's the fiercest flower in the garden? A tiger lily. My mum told me that one. I don't remember much about her, but I remember that. It ain't even a good joke, but it's all I got. You see, I lost my mum when I was only a little cub. Well, I didn't exactly lose her. She was murdered by a human. Which was a shock to me at the time, 'cause I also remember her telling me that humans loved tigers, they adored us, worshipped us. Hung our photos on walls and used our images for all sorts of things from breakfast cereal packs to beers. Yeah. And even clothes, wherever they are. I couldn't understand why a human would kill my mum. I soon would. And I'd suffer the same fate as her. More about that later. Anyway, um, my bad luck continued. After losing my mum, I lost my home. Much later, I realised that it wasn't just my forest home that was disappearing. All over the world, our tiger forests are vanishing. Overtaken by human things like farms, stuff called palm oil. All our trees being cut down, new human houses and roads going up everywhere. Yeah. Fun fact. Today, only seven percent of our tiger forests are still intact. Okay, it's not a fun fact. It's just a fact. I spent the rest of my life on the run, until one night, exhausted from the chase, I was caught in a wire trap set by human poachers. And then in the morning, whilst my foot was still stuck in the trap, I was hit across the head by a human. You know they say your life flashes before your eyes when you die? I just felt pain. Sorry. Just got really dark in here, didn't it? How about another joke then? What do you get if you cross a tiger with a sheep? A stripy sweater. Okay, that wasn't that funny either, and a little offensive to tigers... and sheep. What happened to me next wasn't a laugh either. Let me see, um... my meat was sold as a delicacy. My bones crushed and made into wine and medicine. My teeth made into necklaces and jewellery. Oh yeah, you see these... these pearly whites? They're false. Even my old chap, excuse me, my penis, was sold as an aphrodisiac to some geezer. And, and what was left of me? Well... I turned into this handsome rug you see before you. Don't feel bad for me. I could have been a coat. I spent the last few years in a... in a big old human mansion with a front row view of the telly. It's where I learned that my story is not unique at all. And another one of my not so fun, fun facts is, over the past hundred years, ninety-seven percent of wild tigers like me have gone forever. They're gone. With only around four thousand of us left in the wild today. Human demand for dead tigers is booming, with wildlife crime a global billion dollar business. You know? I'm worth more dead than alive. They say a tiger can't change its stripes. But you can. Humans can. It's not too late to change the story, to speak up. Us wild tigers can't, so it's up to you now. Don't let your children grow up in a world without wild tigers, and only be left with old rugs like me. What is the fiercest flower in the garden? A tiger lily. | 375.73 |
