The unique aqua blue colour of the water in the Huka Falls is due to the air bubbles in the clear water reflecting blue light. The Waikato River, normally up to 100 metres wide, abruptly narrows to just 15 metres as it crosses a hard volcanic ledge and plunges 11 metres. This causes a huge volume of water to collide together, forming a stunning visual feast of powerful falls and rapids.
