The nominate Trogon surrucura surrucura has a dark metallic blue head, neck, and breast, and black cheeks and throat. It has dark brown eyes with a deep orange eye ring. The bill is short and robust, ivory in color, speckled with greenish-gray hues. The lower mandible is black in the center. The upper mandible ends in a small hook. The back is greenish and becomes turquoise closer to the tail. On the wings, the secondary coverts are emerald green with golden highlights, and the remiges are dark gray, slightly marked with a white bar. The underparts and the crest are red.
