n species found in the Red Sea are Tridacna maxima, the most common species, and Tridacna gigas, the giant clam, which can reach an impressive size of up to 1.40 m and weigh nearly 250 kg. These molluscs live in coral reefs between 50 cm and 20 m deep, well exposed to the light on which they depend. Clams lead a completely sedentary life once they reach adulthood. They first secrete a byssus to attach themselves to the marine substrate, then this system disappears with age and is replaced by the simple weight of their shell. Their mantle, often colourful (green, blue, brown), is home to microscopic algae (zooxanthellae) with which they live in symbiosis. Thanks to light, these algae provide much of the animal's food through photosynthesis, supplemented by filtering plankton. Giant clams are hermaphroditic, first producing sperm and then eggs to ensure genetic diversity. Reproduction occurs through the synchronised release of gametes into the water. Giant clams grow slowly. Planktonic larvae take 3 to 6 months to settle and become young bivalves, during which time they are vulnerable to predators. Giant clam shells provide habitat for small organisms such as crabs and shrimp. Giant clams play an essential role in the health of coral reefs by filtering the water and contributing to local biodiversity.
