Sea is home to at least four main species of barracuda. The Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is the largest, reaching up to 2 metres in length and weighing 40 kg. The Yellowtail Barracuda (Sphyraena flavicauda) is smaller, measuring up to 80 cm. The blackfin barracuda (Sphyraena qenie) can reach up to 140 cm and the longfin barracuda (Sphyraena jello) measures about 90 cm. Their bodies are elongated, silvery, with stripes or spots, and their lower jaw is prominent and equipped with sharp teeth. They are active predators, living close to the surface and around reefs, hunting mainly fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. They like to stay in the current, often in schools for juveniles, while adults are more solitary. Their top speed can reach 60 km/h during attacks. Barracudas mainly inhabit tropical and subtropical waters, with the Red Sea being one of the areas where they are frequently seen near coral reefs such as Ras Mohamed.
