Thrissur Pooram, held in Thekkinkadu Maidanam in the heart of Thrissur district, is a major celebration that combines Kerala's spiritual and cultural core. This yearly temple celebration, held during the Malayalam month of Medam (April-May), is commonly considered as the "Mother of all Poorams." Thrissur Pooram, the idea of Shakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Kochi, combines 10 temples to create a stunning display that draws thousands of tourists each year. The festival has an exciting array of events, with vibrantly dressed elephants being a big draw. The Kudamattom ritual, which involves the rapid and rhythmic exchange of brilliantly colored and sequined parasols, is a highly anticipated event that symbolizes the festival's visual beauty. Another notable event is the Ilanjithara Melam, a fascinating performance of traditional instruments. This traditional orchestra, headed by chenda performers, features around 250 musicians, with the audience responding to the rhythms of chenda, kurumkuzhal, kombu, and elathalam. The festival begins with the flag raising ritual, known as Kodiyettam, which signals the start of the festivities. The day begins with Kanimangalam Sastha's ceremonial entry, which is followed by processions of the other participating deities. Each god is transported atop caparisoned elephants, accompanied by vast ensembles of Chenda melam and Panchavadyam, resulting in a captivating visual and musical experience.
