irrelfish is a marine reef fish belonging to the Holocentridae family,recognisable by its red to orange colour and large silvery scales. The giantsquirrelfish (Sargocentron spiniferum) reaches 50 cm and has a dark red spotbehind its eye. Its orange fins and tall body make it easily identifiable. These fishremain hidden during the day in caves and overhangs and come out at night tofeed on small benthic invertebrates. Soldierfish, related to squirrelfish, aredistinguished by their more oval body, white-edged fins and gregariousbehaviour. These fish live in tight schools, hence their name. They sometimesemit sounds using muscles connected to their swim bladder, which they use tocommunicate and mark their territory. They are found in the Red Sea, theIndian Ocean and the tropical Pacific. They live at depths of between 2 and 50metres. These species, emblematic of the Red Sea reefs, play an important role inthe nocturnal ecological balance by regulating zooplankton and smallcrustaceans. They are admired by divers for their flamboyant colours andfascinating social behaviour.
