he main species found in the Red Sea are the bighead trevally (Caranx ignobilis), the blue trevally (Caranx melampygus), the bigeye trevally (Caranx latus) and the black trevally (Caranx lugubris). They sometimes follow large predators such as sharks and are also known to associate with other species such as manta rays for increased protection. Jacks generally reproduce in the open sea through external fertilisation, with the eggs being dispersed in the water column. Sexual maturity varies depending on the species but is often around 40 to 50 cm in length for females. Juveniles may swim in shoals in shallower waters. Young trevally often seek protection near large fish (sharks, groupers) or even under jellyfish to escape predation. This strategy allows them to grow and reach adulthood while minimising risks.
