and damselfish are gregarious fish that live in large schools near coral reefs and rocky outcrops. The Chromis genus comprises nearly a hundred species found in most tropical and temperate seas. Their behaviour is characterised by a tendency to dive and hide when danger threatens. They are often protogynous hermaphrodites, with adults protecting the eggs until they hatch. They are omnivorous with a carnivorous tendency, feeding mainly on small benthic or pelagic invertebrates. Bagnard and sergeant major fish can be recognised by their silvery-white body, five vertical black stripes and often yellow back. They are found in large shoals on the outer slopes of reefs and rocky coastal areas between 1 and 15 metres deep. They feed on zooplankton, algae and small invertebrates. During the breeding season, the males have a blue back. This species can colonise new territories, particularly via the Suez Canal, and is known as a Lessepsian species. Their preferred habitat is coral reefs and shallow coastal rocks, combining shelter and open areas for feeding. Among Chromis and damselfish, juveniles take refuge near cavities and are bright blue in colour for some species, such as Chromis chromis. Males often become territorial during the breeding season.
