fish are common in coral reefs between 3 and 50 metres deep. They have a horn-shaped protuberance on their forehead that develops in adulthood and can measure up to 70 cm. These fish are grey, with the horn growing from the forehead between the eyes, and their two caudal blades (scalpels), usually blue, are used for defence and social interactions. They are omnivorous with a tendency towards herbivory (algae and plankton), living in small groups but sometimes solitary. Surgeonfish comprise more than a dozen species (Acanthurus nigrofuscus, A. triostegus, Zebrasoma desjardinii). Recognisable by their laterally compressed shape, one or two sharp caudal blades, and generally bright colouring or marked patterns, they measure between 15 and 40 cm, with some species exceeding this size. They are herbivorous, grazing on algae on reefs, which plays a key role in the ecological balance of corals. Unicornfish are part of the surgeonfish family, but are distinguished by their frontal horn. Unicornfish can camouflage themselves by changing their colouring to match their environment. They are not particularly aggressive towards humans, but they can be territorial towards other fish species. Unicornfish and surgeonfish are oviparous, laying their eggs in open water, usually in pairs or small groups
