to the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific, the flutefish is well adapted to coral reefs and rocky bottoms, from the shore to depths of over 100 metres. It is frequently observed near reefs, descending into seagrass beds and sandy areas. Its snout is tubular, trumpet-shaped, adapted for sucking in its prey, with a small protractile mouth. Its tail is very thin, often ending in a white filament. It has a grey-blue to greenish, striped or slightly marbled colouring, with two lines and sometimes two rows of blue dots on its back. The ventral side is whitish to silvery and the dorsal/anal fins are located near the tail, usually transparent and pinkish or orange in colour. The flute fish is carnivorous, feeding mainly on small fish, molluscs and crustaceans, which it captures by suddenly sucking them up with its tubular mouth. It hunts alone, in pairs or sometimes in small groups. It moves with discreet undulating movements, taking advantage of its slender shape to camouflage itself from its prey and predators. Juveniles are often seen in lagoons or protected areas, while adults live in deeper and more varied areas of reefs and rocky bottoms.
