The genus Cephea was named in the 19th century, in line with thefashion for giving jellyfish names inspired by figures from mythology linked toMedusa. This jellyfish is described as a large, fleshy form, with a generallybluish umbrella and a pinkish to purplish central dome covered with numerousprotuberances, giving it a cauliflower-like appearance. Its long, filamentoustentacles contain stinging cells that enable it to capture prey. The speciesfrequents calm and relatively clear waters, where it swims slowly in open wateror near the reef bottom. Like other large plankton-feeding jellyfish, Cepheacephea feeds mainly on zooplankton, small crustaceans and other smallorganisms drifting in the water column. By filtering large quantities of water, itcontributes to the flow of organic matter in reef ecosystems and can also serve asprey for certain fish and turtles. Cephea cephea has a life cycle with a polypphase attached to the substrate and a free jellyfish phase. The polyps bud toproduce small jellyfish, called ephyra, which will grow to adulthood, and thiscycle is highly dependent on the health of reef habitats. Jellyfish are verycommon in the Red Sea, especially near tourist resorts such as Hurghada,Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab.
