cephea belongs to the phylum Cnidaria, class Scyphozoa and family Cepheidae. The genus Cephea was named in the 19th century, in line with the fashion for giving jellyfish names inspired by figures from mythology linked to Medusa. This jellyfish is described as a large, fleshy form, with a generally bluish umbrella and a pinkish to purplish central dome covered with numerous protuberances, giving it a cauliflower-like appearance. Its long, filamentous tentacles contain stinging cells that enable it to capture prey. The species frequents calm and relatively clear waters, where it swims slowly in open water or near the reef bottom. Like other large plankton-feeding jellyfish, Cephea cephea feeds mainly on zooplankton, small crustaceans and other small organisms drifting in the water column. By filtering large quantities of water, it contributes to the flow of organic matter in reef ecosystems and can also serve as prey for certain fish and turtles. Cephea cephea has a life cycle with a polyp phase attached to the substrate and a free jellyfish phase. The polyps bud to produce small jellyfish, called ephyra, which will grow to adulthood, and this cycle is highly dependent on the health of reef habitats. Jellyfish are very common in the Red Sea, especially near tourist resorts such as Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab.
