icular filefish has an almost round, silvery body with two large dark bands, one of which passes through the eye, and can grow to around 60 cm. It is very common on reefs and around wrecks such as the SS Thistlegorm. The longfin filefish (Platax teira) has a similar silhouette but is slightly taller, with highly developed dorsal and anal fins, sometimes with a dark spot in the middle of its flank. Juveniles have very elongated dorsal and anal fins, giving them the shape of a dead leaf or seaweed, often brown to reddish-brown in colour with dark spots and stripes. They sometimes lie on their side on the seabed to enhance their camouflage. Adults have a very compressed, almost circular, silvery body with dark vertical stripes. They swim in mid-water at medium depth, often in shoals above the reef or along structures. They are sociable, calm species, living in pairs, small groups or larger shoals depending on the location. There is no obvious dimorphism, males and females look alike. Spawning takes place in open water with the release of gametes, and the pelagic larvae drift in the plankton before reaching coastal areas. Batfish are omnivorous with a strong tendency to feed on algae, small invertebrates, crustaceans, and sometimes small fish.
