The colouring is mainly yellow with dark diagonal, vertical or longitudinal stripes, often accompanied by a black band across the eye, like a mask. The snout is more or less elongated with a small terminal mouth allowing it to peck at coral polyps inside coral colonies. Butterflyfish are found above coral reefs, in lagoons, outer slopes and coral-rich areas, at depths of 2 to 30 metres depending on the species. Butterflyfish are diurnal, often seen in pairs or small groups, darting above the corals on which they depend heavily for food. Reproduction takes place in open water, with the male and female rising to the surface and simultaneously releasing their gametes, which fertilise in the water column. The planktonic larvae drift with the currents for a long time, allowing for large-scale dispersal before settling on a suitable reef.
