Parrotfish grind algae and coral with theirpowerful teeth to feed, which they then digest and expel as sediment. Althoughtheir destructive activity may seem to pose a threat to corals, in reality, byridding them of invasive algae, they save coral reefs from certain death and helpto create small islands and white sandy beaches. Size varies depending on thespecies: from less than 20 cm to large individuals exceeding 1 metre, up to 130cm for the largest. Colours are extremely varied and changeable; they changewith age, sex and often social status, with dominant males displaying very brightgreen and blue hues, sometimes enhanced with pink. Some species have initialphases, often female, which are duller, and final phases of dominant males,which are very colourful. They frequent coral lagoons, reef flats, outer reefslopes and rocky areas at depths of 1 to 10 metres, but some species descend todepths of over 30 metres. Diurnal, they spend the day feeding with otherherbivorous fish such as surgeonfish.
