Juveniles are smaller and differently coloured. These fish often change shape and colour during their lifetime, with some adopting successive hermaphroditism, with females becoming males. They frequent coral reefs, lagoons, outer slopes and sandy areas at depths of 1 to 100 m. In the Red Sea, variants such as Cheilinus abudjubbe with pink lines and red dots can be found. Adults prefer deep, solitary areas, sleeping in crevices or enveloped in mucus. Carnivorous, they feed on hard-shelled invertebrates such as molluscs, crustaceans, sea urchins, invasive starfish such as the crown-of-thorns starfish, and sometimes fish eggs. The humphead wrasse controls populations that are harmful to corals. Some wrasses, such as the blue wrasse, act as mutualistic cleaners, removing parasites from larger fish. They swim using their pectoral fins and live up to 30 years, often alone or in small groups.
