They live on the sea floor near reefs and sandy areas. Electric rays, or torpedorays, have a thicker, more rounded body and are capable of delivering defensiveelectric shocks. The blue-spotted stingray (Taeniura lymma) is a small, colourful ray(disc ~35 cm) with an ochre to olive green back covered with bright blue spots andwhite spots on its belly, very common on the sandy bottoms of reefs. Most rays in theRed Sea are benthic: they spend much of their time resting on the seabed, sometimespartially camouflaged in the sand. They feed on small benthic fish, bivalves, crabs andshrimps, which they dig up with their ventral mouths. Several species, such as theblue-spotted stingray, are ovoviviparous, meaning that the young develop inside thefemale's body and are born fully formed. The caudal sting of stingrays can inflict avery painful and venomous sting, especially if the animal is surprised or accidentallycrushed; however, these rays prefer to flee. Electric rays can deliver a defensive electricshock if they are handled or disturbed too closely.
