and rays share the same ancestry, but rays have adapted to live on the sea floor. Stingrays have an oval, flattened body and a long tail, often armed with a venomous barb. They live on the sea floor near reefs and sandy areas. Electric rays, or torpedo rays, have a thicker, more rounded body and are capable of delivering defensive electric shocks. The blue-spotted stingray (Taeniura lymma) is a small, colourful ray (disc ~35 cm) with an ochre to olive green back covered with bright blue spots and white spots on its belly, very common on the sandy bottoms of reefs. Most rays in the Red Sea are benthic: they spend much of their time resting on the seabed, sometimes partially camouflaged in the sand. They feed on small benthic fish, bivalves, crabs and shrimps, which they dig up with their ventral mouths. Several species, such as the blue-spotted stingray, are ovoviviparous, meaning that the young develop inside the female's body and are born fully formed. The caudal sting of stingrays can inflict a very painful and venomous sting, especially if the animal is surprised or accidentally crushed; however, these rays prefer to flee. Electric rays can deliver a defensive electric shock if they are handled or disturbed too closely.
