National Park is located in the heart of the Indo-Pacific Coral Triangle, an area with one of the highest concentrations of marine biodiversity on the planet. Its warm waters, pristine coral reefs and underwater grasslands create an ideal environment for many species of sea turtles. Green turtles favour shallow areas rich in seagrass beds and algae. Their diet is mainly herbivorous in adulthood. Hawksbill turtles are associated with coral reefs, where they feed on sponges and other sessile invertebrates. They are therefore particularly common on reefs rich in gorgonians and sponges. They behave relatively calmly in these waters, alternating between long periods of slow swimming, resting on the seabed or reefs, and regular ascents to the surface to breathe. Their anatomy is adapted to life at sea, with a streamlined carapace, limbs transformed into flippers, powerful lungs and the ability to remain submerged for several tens of minutes. Despite these aquatic adaptations, they are reptiles that breathe air and still depend on land for reproduction, with females having to come ashore to lay their eggs on beaches. Their life cycle includes a pelagic juvenile phase, during which the young spend several years on the high seas, followed by a gradual return to coastal areas rich in food.
