They are small open-water fish, usually staying a few metres above the substrate, swimming in compact clouds when not at the entrance to caves. They feed on small planktonic organisms suspended in the water, such as zooplankton and small invertebrates. As small prey, they are an important food source for many reef predators such as trevally, lionfish and groupers. Their dense schools create clouds of life around caves and wrecks, contributing to the visual and biological richness of the Red Sea reefs.
