It frequents sandy areas at depths of a fewmetres to several tens of metres. It is observed alone or in small groups, hovering above thesubstrate or moving slowly using its lateral fin. It uses its excellent camouflage to approachprey and blend into the background. It has the ability to change colour at will thanks tochromatophores, with waves of colour moving along its body. If it feels threatened, it canbristle its mantle, display contrasting patterns, and then flee using jet propulsion from itssiphon, expelling water from its pallial cavity. It can emit a cloud of dark ink that roughlymimics the shape of its body, giving it time to retreat.
