ngutan crab lives in coral reefs, amongst bubble coral, at depths of around 10 to 20 metres. It is small, with a carapace measuring approximately 12 to 14 mm, long slender legs and curved claws. Its red hairs trap particles that enhance its camouflage. Its name comes from its hairy appearance, which resembles the fur of an orangutan. The decorator crab comprises several species. Its camouflage behaviour, shared by many crabs and sea spiders, is a survival strategy. They attach elements from their surroundings, such as seaweed, sponges, animal fragments or debris, to their bodies to blend into the background and evade predators. These crabs live in tropical marine environments rich in shelter, particularly coral reefs and shallow rocky seabeds. They often move slowly, which makes camouflage particularly useful.
