Theyfrequent coral reefs, lagoons, outer slopes and sandy areas at depths of 1 to 100m. In the Red Sea, variants such as Cheilinus abudjubbe with pink lines and reddots can be found. Adults prefer deep, solitary areas, sleeping in crevices orenveloped in mucus. Carnivorous, they feed on hard-shelled invertebrates suchas molluscs, crustaceans, sea urchins, invasive starfish such as the crown-ofthornsstarfish, and sometimes fish eggs. The humphead wrasse controlspopulations that are harmful to corals. Some wrasses, such as the blue wrasse,act as mutualistic cleaners, removing parasites from larger fish. They swim usingtheir pectoral fins and live up to 30 years, often alone or in small groups.
