Gametes are released into the water, often during collectivespawning events; fertilisation is external and produces ciliated planktoniclarvae that drift for a few days. After a free-swimming phase, the larvaetemporarily attach themselves to the bottom by a stalk and resemble small sealilies; later, they lose this stalk, develop cirri and become free-swimming adults.
