n church or Duomo of Siena is a masterpiece built in the 13th - 14th century. It is an architectural wonder that captivates with its multicolored marble facade adorned with statues, gargoyles, detailed carvings and stripes. High above the central door, above the round window, is a beautiful gold-backed mosaic, the Coronation of the Virgin. This panel sets the tone for the cathedral which is officially the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta - dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. It is one of Italy's most illustrious Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals. Built as a medieval church it was dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church.
