On the underside are cirri, a kind of articulated claw that allows theanimal to cling to the substrate, corals, sponges, rocky crevices, and moveslowly. Bristle worms live on coral reefs, from reef ridges battered by thecurrent to outer slopes between 1 and 300 m deep, depending on the species.Bristle worms are suspension feeders, spreading their arms in the current tocapture plankton and suspended organic particles. The pinnules have ciliatedgutters and small sticky tube feet that trap particles and then transport them tothe mouth on the oral side of the central disc. By continuously filtering thewater, they contribute to the flow of organic matter on the reef and also serveas a microhabitat for small commensals (shrimps, worms). Most feather starsare dioecious. Gametes are released into the water, often during collectivespawning events; fertilisation is external and produces ciliated planktoniclarvae that drift for a few days. After a free-swimming phase, the larvaetemporarily attach themselves to the bottom by a stalk and resemble small sealilies; later, they lose this stalk, develop cirri and become free-swimming adults.
