Their shape, colour and slow movements make them almost invisible to both prey and predators. They are generally ambush predators, remaining motionless or almost motionless and capturing small prey as it passes within reach. Their diet consists mainly of small fish and crustaceans. The leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) grows to around 10 cm as an adult, inhabits reefs from the surface down to 135 m, and can remain in the same location for long periods. It sways slightly to mimic the movement of a leaf or seaweed in the current.
