In the Indo-Pacific, there is a wide variety, ranging from the small banner grouper to giant groupers such as the Malabar grouper, the humphead grouper (also known as the Grace Kelly grouper), and the starry grouper, with highly variable sizes and colourings. They are opportunistic carnivores that feed mainly on fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Many are solitary and territorial hunters, remaining motionless before pouncing rapidly on their prey. In several species, adults may also change sex during their lifetime, a phenomenon common among groupers. Their build is generally robust, with an imposing head and a single dorsal fin bearing strong spines. Depending on the species, the colouring may be uniform, spotted, striped or mottled, with colours ranging from brown to reddish, light grey or yellow. Size varies greatly depending on the species. Some remain small, around 30 to 50 cm, whilst others reach or exceed 1 metre, and the giant grouper is among the largest groupers in the region. Groupers play an important role in reefs as they regulate populations of small fish and invertebrates. They are also iconic species for diving and underwater photography, as they are often imposing and relatively unafraid.
