In the Indo-Pacific, there isa wide variety, ranging from the small banner grouper to giant groupers such asthe Malabar grouper, the humphead grouper (also known as the Grace Kellygrouper), and the starry grouper, with highly variable sizes and colourings. Theyare opportunistic carnivores that feed mainly on fish, crustaceans andcephalopods. Many are solitary and territorial hunters, remaining motionlessbefore pouncing rapidly on their prey. In several species, adults may also changesex during their lifetime, a phenomenon common among groupers. Their build isgenerally robust, with an imposing head and a single dorsal fin bearing strongspines. Depending on the species, the colouring may be uniform, spotted, stripedor mottled, with colours ranging from brown to reddish, light grey or yellow.Size varies greatly depending on the species. Some remain small, around 30 to 50cm, whilst others reach or exceed 1 metre, and the giant grouper is among thelargest groupers in the region. Groupers play an important role in reefs as theyregulate populations of small fish and invertebrates. They are also iconic speciesfor diving and underwater photography, as they are often imposing andrelatively unafraid.
