National Park is located in the heart of the Indo-Pacific Coral Triangle,an area with one of the highest concentrations of marine biodiversity on theplanet. Its warm waters, pristine coral reefs and underwater grasslands createan ideal environment for many species of sea turtles. Green turtles favourshallow areas rich in seagrass beds and algae. Their diet is mainly herbivorousin adulthood. Hawksbill turtles are associated with coral reefs, where they feedon sponges and other sessile invertebrates. They are therefore particularlycommon on reefs rich in gorgonians and sponges. They behave relatively calmlyin these waters, alternating between long periods of slow swimming, resting onthe seabed or reefs, and regular ascents to the surface to breathe. Their anatomyis adapted to life at sea, with a streamlined carapace, limbs transformed intoflippers, powerful lungs and the ability to remain submerged for several tens ofminutes. Despite these aquatic adaptations, they are reptiles that breathe air andstill depend on land for reproduction, with females having to come ashore to laytheir eggs on beaches. Their life cycle includes a pelagic juvenile phase, duringwhich the young spend several years on the high seas, followed by a gradualreturn to coastal areas rich in food.
