res Sea is home to several species of moray eel, including the Javanese or giant moray eel (Gymnothorax javanicus), which can grow up to 2.4 metres in length. It lives in crevices at depths of between 10 and 50 metres; the yellow-spotted or marbled moray (Gymnothorax flavimarginatus), which is generally around 1.30 metres in length and recognisable by its yellow spots and orange eye, is found at depths of between 1 and 150 metres; the starry moray, the yellowish moray, the tattooed moray, and the white ribbon moray. These species are distinguished by their size, colour and habitat preferences. Moray eels spend the day hidden in rock crevices and fissures, with only their heads protruding. They are primarily nocturnal and hunt at night, feeding on fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Thanks to their great bodily flexibility, they can easily squeeze into narrow spaces to capture their prey. Moray eels have smooth skin, often marbled or spotted, which provides them with effective camouflage. They lack pectoral and pelvic fins, but have a fused dorsal, caudal and anal fin forming a long ridge. Their mouth opens and closes constantly; this movement serves for respiration, not aggression. Moray eels lay pelagic eggs, which hatch into transparent leptocephalus larvae that can float in the plankton for up to a year before metamorphosing.
