us Rhinopias belongs to the family Scorpaenidae, which includes scorpionfishand lionfish. They measure around 15 to 25 cm in length and often have a strangeappearance: a broad head, a compressed body, prominent dorsal spines, and skincovered in flaps or appendages that mimic seaweed, crinoids or corals. They are foundon reefs, coral slopes, rocky areas, seaweed beds and occasionally in dark, muckdiving-type environments. Their presence is therefore closely linked to habitats rich instructures where they can blend into the background. They are ambush predators.They feed mainly on live fish, crustaceans and molluscs, which they suck in rapidlywith their very large mouth. They hunt mainly at night or by lying in wait, remainingmotionless for long periods. Their strategy relies less on speed than on camouflage andthe element of surprise. Several species exist within the genus Rhinopias: Rhinopiasfrondosa, the leafy scorpionfish, which is highly ornamented and highly variable incolour, and Rhinopias eschmeyeri, which is more uniform in appearance and has fewerskin filaments. Rhinopias are gonochoristic and oviparous; males and females areseparate, and fertilisation takes place in the water column following a brief courtshipdisplay. A detail often noted in these fish is the repeated opening of the mouth, as ifthey were yawning, for which there is no certain explanation.
