Recognisable by their laterally compressed shape, one or two sharpcaudal fins, and generally bright colouring or distinctive patterns, they measure between 15and 40 cm, with some species exceeding this size. They are herbivorous, grazing on algae onthe reefs, which plays a key role in the ecological balance of the corals. Reproduction isoviparous, with eggs laid in open water, usually in pairs or small groups. Several species areterritorial, with dominant males defending a territory and sometimes a harem of females.During the breeding season, groups may form, and the eggs subsequently produce pelagiclarvae capable of dispersing the species over long distances. This larval phase partly explainstheir wide distribution across the Indo-Pacific. Well-known species include the bluesurgeonfish (Paracanthurus hepatus), the white-breasted surgeonfish (Acanthurusleucosternon), the clown surgeonfish (Acanthurus lineatus), the zebra surgeonfish(Acanthurus sohal), the three-striped surgeonfish (Acanthurus triostegus) and the sailfinsurgeonfish of the genus Zebrasoma. The striped surgeonfish (Ctenochaetus striatus) is alsovery common throughout much of the Indo-Pacific.
