at Plains and Midwest contain thousands of ghost towns. A barbed-wire fence, an old van, an abandoned building, and tall prairie grass blowing in the wind are visible. Often decimated by the Dust Bowl, agricultural shifts, or highway bypasses, these towns feature decaying wood structures, vintage cars, and rusting vehicles left to slowly be reclaimed by the elements. Many of these rural communities peaked in the early 20th century, serving as railroad hubs. Droughts, the Dust Bowl, and the mechanization of farming meant towns no longer needed large populations of manual laborers. The construction of the U.S. Interstate Highway System bypassed local businesses, causing commerce to dry up and towns to empty out.
