Adults measure around one metre in carapace length, with individuals reaching 1.2 to 1.3 metres, and an average weight often between 80 and 160 kg, with some exceptional specimens approaching 300 kg. The carapace, or back, is oval, flattened and well adapted to swimming and hydrodynamics. Its colour ranges from olive brown to marbled brown, dotted with lighter or darker patterns. Interestingly, the name green turtle comes not so much from the colour of its carapace as from the greenish tint of its fat, which is linked to its diet rich in marine plants. The head is small compared to that of other sea turtles, with a more rounded profile than that of the hawksbill turtle, a species often found in the same areas. It has a single pair of large prefrontal plates between the eyes, a classic distinguishing feature, and a non-hooked beak that is less sharp than that of more carnivorous species. The green sea turtle is one of the fastest sea turtles, capable of briefly reaching speeds of several tens of kilometres per hour, particularly when fleeing or actively moving. The Red Sea is an important feeding and breeding area for this species. It is mainly observed at shallow depths, typically between the surface and around 30 metres.
