Sea is home to two iconic anthias species, the red anthias and the common anthias. Females measure 7 to 9 cm and are orange or bright yellow in colour, while males are larger, measuring up to 15 cm. They are distinguished by their carmine red colour and spectacular fins. The striped anthias is endemic to the Red Sea and can be recognised by its white lateral stripe and overall purple-red colour; it grows to 13 cm. They are planktonophagous, feeding mainly on zooplankton and other small organic particles in suspension. They capture their prey using a protractile mouth and actively participate in the material cycle on the reefs. Anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites: all are born female, and the most dominant becomes male as it grows. Reproduction takes place in groups, often organised into harems led by a dominant male.
