It lives at depths of between 15 and 70 m, often in groups or harems. It feeds on zooplankton. The emperor angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) has beautiful yellow and blue markings with vertical white stripes. It moves in pairs in areas rich in sponges and corals. Like all angelfish, it has a long spine on the lower cheek of its head, which it uses to deter opponents or fight off invaders.
