The town is located between Freiburg and Basel in the center of the Markgraeflerland in the western foothill zone of the Upper Rhine Graben at the southern Black Forest, a landscape that was already cultivated during Roman times. They settled on the banks of the Klemmbach shortly after the transition of the Klemmbach or Weilertal into the Rhine plain below the Blauen massif.
