It swims using synchronised movements of its dorsal and anal fins, accelerating with its tail. It can emit growls or clicks to defend itself or intimidate others using its teeth or swim bladder. Its spine has a locking system reminiscent of a gun trigger, allowing it to wedge itself into crevices and resist extraction by predators. This also allows it to anchor itself securely while resting or facing currents. It benefits from cleaning by cleaner fish and shrimps, particularly the cleaner wrasse.
