hed moon coral (Dipsastraea spp.) sits pale and drained of colour at the centre of a wide degraded reef seascape in the Andaman Sea, its surface having transitioned from healthy dark brown through pale beige toward full white as thermal stress forced the expulsion of its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. A striped surgeonfish (Acanthurus lineatus) moves across the foreground, still actively using a reef showing significant signs of coral reef decline and biodiversity loss.
