The starfish extrudes its stomach onto the coral surface and digests the living polyp tissue externally, leaving the calcium carbonate skeleton entirely exposed and bone white. A single adult can consume up to ten square metres of living coral per year, making population outbreaks one of the most destructive natural forces on Indo-Pacific reefs.
