of thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) occupies a mixed reef structure on the Andaman Sea, positioned between hard coral formations showing varying degrees of health and coral tissue loss consistent with active predation pressure. With up to twenty-one arms and a body that can exceed forty centimetres in diameter, Acanthaster planci is one of the largest sea stars on Indo-Pacific reefs. While naturally occurring at low densities, unchecked outbreaks have caused measurable reef loss across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and monitoring population levels is an active focus of citizen science and reef survey programmes.
